POST 8 | COMPARISON BETWEEN TRADITIONAL AND MODERN ARCHITECTURE

Greeting! I’m back for continuing my blog. I’ll like to talk about the different of characteristics and designs between Malaysian vernacular architecture and modern Malaysian architecture for today. 

Firstly, the differences between traditional and modern architecture is structure of the house. Malaysian vernacular architecture more are provided by raised stilts to solve the flooding problem, full length windows, grills and panels for good interior ventilation. Low windows shaded by large overhangs reduce glare from the skies and roofed with leaves. And also no-ceiling design which can direct see through the structure of the house.

Otherwise, modern architecture is more to simple, giving way to a clean aesthetic where the materials meet in simple, well-executed joints. Modern architecture usually designs which based on rectangular forms and horizontal and vertical lines, such as boxes or linked boxes. Modern architecture always play the design with flat roof, squarish or geometrical exterior, large glass windows and landscapes.

On the other hand, there are big different on materials between both of them. Most of the materials used in traditional architecture are natural material such as timber column, leaves of trees or plant roof and wood flooring which can easily get from the jungle or forest nearby their habitats. But, modern architecture normally used steel, concrete or brick as columns, walls, ceilings and floors. They also apply radiant heating systems enhance human comfort.

Lastly, the difference on design styles of traditional and modern architecture. Traditional architectures normally are using same type of design style. For example, most of Malay houses are same design style between each other, there are only have slightly different based on the places. But, the design style of modern architecture based on the different particular's needs, living styles, habits, favorite colours, styles and designs. Modern architecture emphasize the feelings or moods which created by the exterior and interior. Sometimes, they also can be totally different between the exterior and interior.

In conclusion, Malaysian vernacular architecture is more to natural, designed based on their living habits and environment, the material they used also more on natural material. Traditional architectures are based on the human's needs and wants to fulfill their life. But modern architecture is more on geometrical, simple design and man-made material which is more strong and last-longer. Modern architectures are also more emphasize on human's feelings and moods.
