POST 6 | EXAMPLES OF MODERN MALAYSIAN ARCHITECTURE

Yes, it’s me again. I’ll share you few examples of modern architecture in Malaysia which incorporate well with the nature. Before I go into the examples, I would like to roughly talk about what modern architecture is again.

Modern Architecture

“Modern architecture is a new architecture style that emerged in many Western countries in the decade World War I. It was based on the "rational" use of modern materials, the principles of functionalist planning, and the rejection of historical precedent and ornament.” (Networks, 2000) Modern architecture emerged in late 19th century and began to reach maturity and acceptance in the early 20th century.

For the first example, the Terrance house renovation which architected by O2 Design Atelier Sd. Bhd in 2015 and it located at Sungai Buloh, Selangor. From outside, the lush garden at the front porch is integrated with the house’s contemporary design approach. The interior of the house has been designed with open plan concept, connecting Living, Dining and Kitchen space. The traditional concept of courtyard house has been reinvented here. (Archdaily, 2016)

Next, The Deck House which is architected by Choo Gim Wah architect in 2012 and it located in Pahang. The profile and section of this house hugs the terrain with minimum interference of the existing slope. Despite its steel and glass construction, the house functions like a traditional tropical house with tall ceiling heights, well-lit interior spaces, and sufficient ventilation with windows on most walls and aluminium louvers at the highest part of building for the hot air to escape. (Archdaily, 2013)

This few modern architectures are also applied the elements of Malaysian traditional architecture into the design, such as high ceiling design, large window and others. We can to learn from the past when creating a new building to get the most suitable architecture which can incorporate very well with our environment and also protect our nature environment.

I’ll make a comparison between traditional and modern Malaysian architecture. Stay tuned.
