POST 5 | MODERN ARCHITECTURE
Yoooo! I'm here again to talk about what modern architecture is. I shared Malaysian traditional architecture in my few previous posts. So, I'm going to talk about the definition, characteristics, design style etc of modern architecture.
How much do you know about modern architecture? Traditional aesthetics and cookie-cutter design are broke away by modern architecture. They more are designed based on layout, location, function and so on. "Frank Lloyd Wright’s mentor, Louis Sullivan famously stated that, “Form follows function”. This idea is expressed by Modernism’ tendency to have land or the function of a project dictate much of the design ideas." (Distinct Build, 2010)

Simple and clean are the fundamentals of modern architecture. Some modern architects express themselves through simplicity, clear views of structural elements and by eschewing unnecessary design details. Modern architecture more focus on industrial metal such as steel, concrete and glass to keep it in simple.
For the design and structure part, modern architecture is more emphasis of rectangular and vertical and horizontal lines. Shapes of houses are usually based on boxes, lines, or linked boxes. It also emphasis on open, flowing interior space which no longer defined by walls, doors and hallways for the living space and also generous use of glass and natural light. Sun and shading used to enhance human comfort.

For material part, modern architects often use modern material and system to build the house. Exposed applications made by steel columns, concrete block is used as finished material and so on. They also use traditional material in new ways, such as wood , brick and stone used in simplified ways reflecting a modern aesthetic.

Overall, clean lines and minimalist interiors define modern architecture that allow the structure to speak for itself an take center stage.
